grijze stad

grey city.
I'm working on a painting of a grey city, based on Kowloon City in Hong Kong and on the grey drawings of Hugh Ferris. I encountered his work in the book Delirious New York of Rem Koolhaas. Usually architects aren't really into reading, but this is one of the few books that they do tend to read.
This painting has colour in it, although the name is grey city.

A thinker and Nuenen

This is a big (100x60cm) ink drawing from a living (not moving) model. More drawings from this model to come soon.

I am trying to use more colour, but as you can see I'm starting slowly. This is a pastel drawing after a black and white reproduction of an oil painting (Landschap met wilgen) by Vincent van Gogh. It is a landscape in the countryside of Nuenen, where I was born. Though I didn't experience it as dark as mr. van Gogh.
He painted it in April 1884, 43x58cm, the same size as I used.

Farmers from the Philippines

These are all farmers that get a micro-credit through the organization kiva. I virtually visited these farmers in the Philippines, and made black and white drawings after the photo's taken on the spot. They need a small loan to buy new seeds, or a piece of land to expand their business. The drawings are available in limited print on archival paper (size on request). The profit will be used to fund the depicted farmers.

Kees van Dongen painting experiments

I did some sketches (and some paintings) after work of the painter Kees van Dongen, from Rotterdam.
I don't literally copy the paintings, but try to exaggerate a little, or add a little to the expression of the person.

I think the woman here is a bit more sceptical then the original van Dongen:

The original van Dongen

a little sketch of the famous painting

and an anxious girl in pastel (zacht krijt)
that wears a  blue shirt now..

and the last ones are somewhat more intense portraits (70cm x 90cm) , that are not directly derived from Kees van Dongen, but related to his work (especially the eyes):

Bangkok

This is the first part of a panorama view of Bangkok, Thailand. It's based on the view from the Prince Palace Hotel.  By the end of January it should be finished. The size is approximately 200cm x 800cm.
